Muth Heuriger aus Langenzersdorf Öffnungszeiten

We were wandering the streets in the Grunzing area in search of a heuriger to taste some local wine and food but without the trappings of a tourist focused heuriger. This one is some 750 meters from the #38 tram stop.The entrance is non-descript with the signature pine boughs of a heuriger hanging outside what looked like a residential door. The space opened to a large gravel yard with trees and vines all around and a 200 year old chestnut tree. Nikolaus our host greeted us and we sat ourselves at one of the many picnic style tables. He explained the routine to us. For our starters we went inside to pick amongst an assortment of Austrian cheeses, cured meats, salads, and spreads. As you picked from the deli he sliced and placed the choices on plates which we chose to share between each other back at the table. These were excellent and included a fresh cucumber salad, sauerkraut, lentil salad, blood sausage, and a cured smoke ham similar to speckl.For our mains we were invited by Nikolaus to a chalkboard to choose from a list of available entrées for the day. He translated for us and there were about 10 dishes. We chose a lamb ragout with polenta and a simple country stew with vegetables and ham. This is where the dinner broke into best meal category! We love country cooking based on fresh flavour a and quality ingredients - these dishes made the mark. Nikolaus' wife is the cook and this is really a meal made by someone who understands food!The wines were local and amazingly good. We tried both a white and a red on his recommendation and they both were eye opening.The atmosphere was great and it was truly an evening in a backyard in the country! Highly recommend this place if you want to eat with the locals (there were lots of regulars there!)

If you're visiting Vienna, you should definitely hit one of the many heurigen that dot the outskirts of the city. They can be a bit bewildering for the uninitiated, so the "touristy" ones definitely have their place. But if you're looking for something a bit more authentic and maybe a little outside the comfort zone of the typical tourist, Muth fits the bill.Everything we ate and drank was really quite good and reasonably-priced. The spicy liptauer and the homemade soup were both highlights. And the wine too, of course! The staff was helpful, friendly and very patient with my poor German and all my stupid questions. They sometimes have a guitarist wandering about singing old Heurigen songs, and we were lucky enough to happen to go on such a night.To get there: Take the D tram toward Nussdorf and get off at the Grinzinger Strasse stop, or take the U4 subway to Heiligenstadt and transfer to the D tram (or walk) to Grinzinger. From there you can just walk up the hill a ways, turn right at Nestlebachgasse, then left on Probusgasse. (You could also catch a bus along Grinzinger, but I don't think it's far enough of a walk to bother with it.)
